SAINT GREGORY THE GREAT
Welcome to the website of Saint Gregory the Great
Church in Bluffton, South Carolina. We’re a history-making
congregation of Catholic people for several reasons.
One is the heritage of the Pinckney family, settlers of this Lowcountry region near Hilton Head who kept the faith, built their own family chapel, and expanded sufficiently to become a parish, Saint Andrew Church, in 1960.
A second reason that we’re history-making is the unprecedented growth of this parish family. From 1995 to the present, the parish has increased its membership by more than 7,000 souls. We were renamed Saint Gregory the Great Church in the year 2000 when a new, expansive parish facility was built to house a church and to begin developing an ambitious master plan for educational and other ministerial facilities. From beginnings with South Carolina planters and educators, the parish membership now includes people from a diversity of professional backgrounds and racial, ethnic, and regional origins.
A third reason that we’re news makers is that the parish is noted for our volunteer spirit. A prayerful and devout group of Catholics, we’re very active in service to church, civic community, and persons in need.
Faith, family, and fellowship characterize us. Read on, and know that here amid marshlands and marvelous seascapes, there is a parish full of people who hold you in prayer.
Built upon the Catholic heritage of Pinckney Colony in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, Saint Gregory the Great in Bluffton is a parish family dedicated to worshipping and honoring Almighty God through our Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.
Under the leadership of our Holy Father the Pope and the shepherding of the
Bishop of Charleston, we rejoice that our faith is centered in the celebration of the Eucharist with our Catholic brothers and sisters throughout the world.
We support one another in prayer and provide opportunities for liturgy and
worship. We encourage spiritual growth through Christian formation and
education. We seek to integrate our Christian faith with our family lives and enjoy
one another in fellowship.
We strive to be good stewards of the gifts God freely gives and joyfully
share our time, talent, and treasure, in building the Kingdom of God. We live the
Gospel by serving our neighbors in their spiritual and physical needs.
In his office of pontiff, Saint Gregory the Great created the title servus
servorum Dei, servant of the servants of God. In the spirit of our patron, our
mission is to give glory to God through our care for one another.
Saint Gregory the Great Catholic parish will be a beacon of Catholicity, recognized as a large, welcoming and effective faith community serving the Lowcountry of South Carolina.
Inspired by the majesty of the Mass and sustained by the power of the Holy Spirit and the sacraments, we will use our gifts of time, talent and treasure to provide the services and ministries necessary to promote the Catholic faith through our commitment to educate the young, meet the spiritual and material needs of all God's children, and glorify the Lord by our Christian example.
